MISSOULA – People will have the opportunity to purchase wild horses and burros in Missoula on Saturday.

The Wild Horses and Burros event is being held at the Missoula Fairgrounds and is sponsored by The Bureau of Land Management Montana-Dakotas Billings field office.

There are more than 15 gentled horses and more than 60 wild horses and burros available. Both sell and adoption options are available.

Adoption prices start at $125 and sale eligible horses begin at $25.  These horses were brought in mostly from Utah and Nevada.

Trainers said it’s a common misconception that because horses are wild, they are harder to train. The truth may be the opposite, however.

"Nine times out of ten when you have horses with problems or behavior problems it’s because people have released the pressure at the wrong time," said tip trainer Matt Bischof. "Horses learn from a release of pressure and taught them to be bad. Sometimes they don’t even realize they do it, so the advantages of getting a mustang in a training aspect is you have a clean slate."

The adoption begins at 11 a.m. on Saturday.

Untouched wild horses and burros will be offered through a silent competitive bid beginning at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 23, and trained horses will be offered beginning at 11:30 am on Saturday, June 23 through a verbal competitive bid.
