History lovers celebrated 151 years of Fort Shaw’s history in Montana on Sunday afternoon with an annual summer celebration.
Visitors could speak with reenactors, tour the old quarters, and see live reenactments.
Sun River Valley Historical Society President Burnette Batista said the celebration is a great way to give the public an opportunity to see how the fort is being rebuilt.
"This fort was built to protect the Mull Road. Years ago, this road went from Fort Benton all the way to Fort Walla Walla in Washington. They built this fort so the soldiers could protect the road. There was also a lot of gold mining going on, with a lot of gold going up and down the road, so they needed the protection," she said.
The soldiers who were based in Fort Shaw took part in three different battles. Fort Shaw was abandoned as a military post in 1890.
It’s located 24 miles west of Great Falls along Highway 200.
