The Cascade County Commissioners approved housing for a resident deputy for the Sun River Valley Tuesday.

The memorandum of understanding is between Sun River School District No. 55 and the Cascade County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff Jesse Slaughter said the deputy will patrol the Fort Shaw/Simms area.

“They will be helping the schools with school security. If there is a threat to the school, they are going to deal with that. If there is an issue in those communities, they will deal with that. They will be that community law enforcement for that area.”

The school district will provide housing for the deputy, who will be based out of Fort Shaw starting July 1.

The residence is a duplex with the superintendent living on one side. The other side was initially meant to house a teacher in the district.

Cascade County Undersheriff Cory Reeves said the home has been vacant for some time.

“We are in the process right now of trying to find that resident deputy through the selection process,” Reeves said.

They currently have contracts with Belt and Cascade to provide law enforcement for the two towns. Slaughter would like to have a resident deputy in both Belt and Cascade in the future.
