GREAT FALLS — The American Red Cross is always in need of blood donations, but the Red Cross chapter in Great Falls is also in need of people to help transport the blood - and Dave and Terry Stukey hope their story might encourage people to volunteer.

For the Stukeys, volunteering with the Red Cross is more than just a way to pass the time.

“I had an operation a few years back and it kind of went bad. I had to have a couple blood transfusions, so when this opportunity came around and I heard about it, I thought it was a great chance to give back,” Dave said.

They drive all across the state picking up blood from donation drives and bring it back to Great Falls to be processed. Some volunteers also deliver blood to hospitals across the state.

“Also, during the COVID time, I think it’s a nice opportunity to be able to get out and go for a drive and see the state and the beautiful country that we live in,” said Terry.

On Wednesday, the Stukeys went to Bozeman and Helena for pickups.

They don’t just give their time, though - they also donate their blood.

“It’s very rewarding. We feel like we’re doing something positive for our society. I think we’re setting a good example for our grandkids. You give back to society when you can and where you can,” Dave said.

The Red Cross website has more information about such volunteer opportunities, including this overview of requirements for the position of "Biomedical- Transportation Specialist":
