GREAT FALLS — With winter weather again moving through Montana and more snow on the way, now is as good a time as any to get snow tires put on your vehicle.

There are many places around Great Falls that can help you with getting your car ready for the winter, but Tire-Rama manager Mark Baune says that the further into the season you wait, the longer it will take to get your tires, no matter where you go.

“Everybody waits until the last minute. This is my 48th snow season and that has never changed,” said Baune. “Right now, we are four hours out most of the time. I’ve got tomorrow booked up. Pretty much all tire shops are busy so if you don’t want to wait, it’s best to get them on sooner rather than later.”

Some of the benefits of snow tires versus regular tires include better traction on slick roads, decreased stopping distance, and more control over your vehicle. Baune says that this is due to a special formulation that snow tires have in their tread rubber. The rubber doesn’t get hard and contract in the cold weather, allowing it to grip the road better in wet conditions.

As for his advice when it comes to driving in the elements? “Slow down. Take your time and add 15 minutes to your trip. Be safe.”
