A Friday night hail storm has done severe damage to several regions of north-central Montana, with golf ball-sized hail reported in Valier and tennis ball-sized hail observed in Dutton.

Wind reports ranged from 60 miles per hour to even more. Pondera and Teton counties were under Severe Thunderstorm Warning for much of the day, followed by reports of broken windows and damaged roofs on houses.

Scott Curry, a resident of Valier just 19 miles northwest of Conrad, took to social media Friday to express his concerns and illustrate the intensity of the storm.

“So you can guess what our house looks like after [Friday’s] storm,” he wrote on Facebook. “Thank God for insurance.”

The severe thunderstorm watch was in effect for most of north-central Montana until 8 p.m. Friday, according to the National Weather Service. The strongest storm of the day missed north Great Falls but was seen in Highwood.

I drove through Valier about 45 minutes after the storm passed yesterday. A lot of broken windows and windshields, trees down and hail was ping pong sized.
