For eight years now, students from Central Catholic have been heading to the creek take water samples.

Kris Warren, the biology teacher, explained, “We are out here studying the Belt Creek watershed and looking at some of the acid mine drainage that’s coming out of the creek bed and doing a watershed analysis, looking at different aspects of it. We are doing fish populations with fish and chemical water quality studies.”

Students are testing for nitrate and phosphate. They use tubes and pills to determine just how high the levels are in the creek.

For some student’s getting to learn from real professionals is the highlight of the trip

“Getting to learn from people who experience it every day is pretty awesome," said Riley Erickson student.

The students will compare the day's results to the samples they took in previous years.
