BUTTE — A 12-year-old girl from Canada died in a one-vehicle crash in Beaverhead County late Saturday night, according to the Montana Highway Patrol.
MHP said a vehicle from Alberta, Canada, was northbound on Interstate 15 when it crashed near mile marker 44 at around 10:20 p.m. on Saturday.
The vehicle was traveling through a construction zone when the driver attempted to merge, went off the right side of the road, and hit a delineator post.
The driver then re-entered the road and over-corrected, causing the vehicle to roll. MHP said the vehicle came to rest on its top in the road.
The girl was thrown from the vehicle; she was taken to Barrett Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
The girl was likely not wearing her seatbelt, according to MHP.
A 44-year-old man, 40-year-old woman, and two children ages five and 11 were seatbelted and injured in the crash.
The name of the victim has not yet been released.
Speed is suspected as a factor. MHP continues to investigate the crash.
